Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 October 2026
Abroad is run by Skylark Studios ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect when you use Abroad and our other conversation apps built on the same service (such as Smalltalk and Dialectic), why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We've tried to keep it short and plain.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and a password you choose (the password is stored securely by our sign-in provider; we never see it).
- What you say in calls and texts: when you talk to a character, your voice is recorded in short clips and turned into text so the character can reply. We keep the text of your conversations, not the audio.
- Things you tell the characters: so they can remember you between conversations, we save short notes about what you've shared (for example your name, your job, or plans you mentioned), plus summaries of recent conversations.
- Your learning progress: your level, grades, words you've learned, corrections, interests, and the reason you gave for learning.
- Usage information: when and how long you use the app, which features you use, which ad (if any) brought you here, and basic technical details such as your browser type and IP address (used to keep the service working, measure our ads and stop abuse).
Your camera: if you turn the camera on during a call, the picture is shown only on your own screen. It is never recorded or sent to us.
How we use it
- To run the app: generating the characters' replies and voices, understanding what you say, grading calls and tracking your progress.
- To make characters remember you and feel consistent.
- To send you a welcome email when you sign up, and emails you ask for (such as a password reset).
- To understand how the app is used and improve it, and to keep costs and abuse under control (for example a daily usage limit).
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use your conversations to train AI models.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers to run the app. They process data only to provide their service to us:
| Provider | What for |
|---|---|
| Anthropic | Generating the characters' replies and grading (conversation text) |
| ElevenLabs | Character voices and turning your speech into text (reply text, your voice clips) |
| OpenAI | Backup speech-to-text if the main one is unavailable (your voice clips) |
| Supabase | Accounts and sign-in (email, password) |
| Render | Hosting the app and storing your progress |
| Resend | Sending emails (email address) |
| Meta (Facebook) | Measuring our ads: which ad you came from and whether you signed up or started a call |
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and progress for as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your personal information within 30 days, except where we must keep something by law.
Your choices and rights
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete your account and everything linked to it, by emailing hello@abroadapp.io.
- Depending on where you live (for example California, Canada, the UK or the EU), you may have additional rights, such as to object to certain uses or to complain to a data protection authority. We'll honour these requests wherever they apply.
- You can stop using the microphone or camera at any time in your browser settings (the app needs the microphone for calls, but you can type instead).
Storage on your device and ads
The app saves your settings and some progress in your browser's local storage so it works smoothly. Clearing your browser data removes it from that device.
If you arrive from one of our ads, we note which ad it was (from the link you tapped). We use the Meta Pixel, which uses cookies, to tell Meta when someone visits, signs up or starts their first call, so we can see which ads work. It doesn't receive your conversations, voice or email address. You can limit ad tracking in your browser and in your Facebook or Instagram ad settings.
Children
Our apps are not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact us and we'll delete the account.
Security
We use encrypted connections and reputable providers, and limit who can access data. No service is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, they use appropriate safeguards for these transfers.
Changes
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll update the date above and let you know in the app or by email.
