Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and Skylark Studios ("we", "us") for using Abroad and our other conversation apps built on the same service (such as Smalltalk and Dialectic). By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
What Abroad is
Abroad lets you practise a language (and other skills) by talking to animated AI characters. The characters, their lives and their replies are generated by artificial intelligence. They are not real people, and what they say can be wrong, inaccurate or unexpected. Don't rely on them for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice, or in an emergency.
Who can use it
You must be at least 13 years old. If you're under 18 (or the age of majority where you live), you need a parent or guardian's permission. You're responsible for keeping your password safe and for what happens on your account.
Using it fairly
Please don't:
- use the app to break the law, or to create harmful, abusive, hateful, sexual or violent content;
- try to get around usage limits, hack, overload, copy or reverse-engineer the service, or access it with bots or scripts;
- share your account, or sign up using someone else's details.
To keep costs fair for everyone there is a daily usage limit. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms.
Your content
What you say and type stays yours. You give us permission to use it to run the app for you (for example to generate replies, remember things you've told the characters and track your progress), as described in our Privacy Policy.
Our content
The app, its characters, artwork, voices and lessons belong to us or our licensors. You may use them for your own personal learning while you use the app, but not copy, resell or redistribute them.
Price and changes
Abroad is currently free. If we introduce paid features, we'll tell you the price clearly before you pay anything. We're still building the app, so features may change, be added or removed, and the service may sometimes be unavailable.
No warranty
The app is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we don't promise that it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that the AI's replies or grades will be accurate.
Limit of liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for any loss of data, and our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (or US$50 if you haven't paid anything). Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can't be excluded.
Ending
You can stop using the app at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or if we stop offering the service.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If we make a meaningful change, we'll update the date above and let you know. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new terms.
